The prestigious Women's Prize Trust just announced this year's big winners at a ceremony in London, and it is a massive win for debut authors. American writer Virginia Evans took home the fiction prize for her stunning first novel, 'The Correspondent'. The judges absolutely loved how she effortlessly crafted a deeply moving story told entirely through letters. Meanwhile, Canadian journalist Lyse Doucet grabbed the nonfiction award for her book, 'The Finest Hotel in Kabul: A People’s History of Afghanistan'. Her work paints a beautiful and heartbreaking picture of ordinary Afghan people showing incredible resilience through decades of conflict. Both of these talented women walked away with a cool £30,000 and some beautiful custom artwork to mark their achievements. It is pretty incredible that both top spots went to first-time authors this year, highlighting the incredible raw talent out there. Beyond these big awards, the Women’s Prize Trust continues to support fresh voices through their Discoveries program, which helps unpublished female novelists get their start.
