This week, representatives from the GBA announced that this introduction signifies a major advancement in the publishing sector's increasing dedication to ecological accountability and addressing climate change. Andrew Richard Albanese, Editor-in-Chief, reports that the Green Book Alliance (GBA), a joint effort focused on promoting eco-friendly practices in the book publishing world, has unveiled its complimentary GBA Book Carbon Calculator.
This instrument aims to assist publishers and related businesses in quantifying and gaining insight into the carbon footprint of their publications. According to a statement from GBA officials, this calculator is particularly beneficial for individuals and organizations just starting to assess their carbon impact. It provides a straightforward and easy-to-use method for publishing experts to compute their emissions figures and potentially pinpoint areas for adopting greener methods. More precisely, the tool enables users to:
- Assess the carbon impact of a single book.
- Make production choices that are better informed and have less environmental effect.
- Calculate emissions across significant operational sectors.
- Set initial benchmarks for their organization.
- Monitor advancements in sustainability over time.
- Participate in internal planning and reporting related to environmental efforts.
Brian O’Leary, Executive Director of BISG and a co-founder of GBA, stated that while the book industry has improved its carbon impact reporting in recent years, these reports typically review past decisions. He explained that the new carbon calculator empowers publishers and their business associates to evaluate carbon implications *before* making sourcing choices. O'Leary added that the tool is designed to encourage discussions among publishers, printers, and paper providers, helping them grasp how planning and production choices influence carbon emissions. He expressed hope that its free availability would integrate sustainability into routine sourcing dialogues.
Towards a Greener Tomorrow Established in September 2020, the Green Book Alliance aims to concentrate on "globally suitable aspects of making the worldwide supply chain more environmentally friendly." This alliance is collaboratively managed by Book Industry Communication (BIC), Book Industry Study Group (BISG), and BookNet Canada (BNC), yet it actively invites and supports participation from other international publishing entities. The origins of the GBA Book Carbon Calculator can be traced back to a workshop on gathering sustainability data held at the 2025 Frankfurt Book Fair, where participants from the industry highlighted the necessity for enhanced reporting and assessment instruments. Consequently, the GBA collaborated with New Society Publishers and ECW Press, who had previously created two complementary tools: the Book Carbon Footprint Calculator, designed to estimate "the greenhouse gas emissions from a printed book, from its inception to its arrival in the warehouse," and the Publisher’s Carbon Footprint Calculator, a "carbon accounting utility that assists publishing firms in quantifying and comprehending their total greenhouse gas emissions."
Building on these foundations, the Green Book Alliance has now collectively transformed these initiatives into the new GBA Book Carbon Calculator, a web-based resource for "publishers, printers, and supply chain collaborators worldwide."
This tool is designed to facilitate "more environmentally aware decisions, either instantaneously or post-production, for documenting carbon effects for reporting or offset purposes." The list of sponsors and organizations providing support includes Gibbs Smith, Publishing Scotland, Friesens, ECW Press, and New Society Publishers. This week's announcement from GBA representatives highlighted that the launch signifies "a substantial stride in the publishing industry's increasing dedication to environmental stewardship and climate initiatives."
They noted that it achieves this by rendering emissions monitoring "more accessible and tailored to the industry." The representatives emphasized that, in addition to quantifying emissions, the calculator also "promotes dialogue" among all participants in the publishing supply chain, underscoring that sustainability is a continuous endeavor. To commemorate the calculator's introduction, the Green Book Alliance is scheduled to host a live launch and demonstration webinar on June 30, 2026, at 11 a.m. ET. During this event, participants will discover the calculator's functionality and have the opportunity to pose questions to the development team. The webinar is free of charge and open to everyone. Those interested can sign up via the provided link. Furthermore, the GBA intends to form a working group to assist in directing the creation of subsequent iterations of this instrument.
