# Katharine Morse

## Biography

Katharine Duncan Morse was born on June 19, 1888, in Amherst, Massachusetts, into an intellectually engaged family; her father, Anson Daniel Morse, was a renowned historian. She traveled in Europe at sixteen and later attended Smith College, where she published poems, and continued her studies at UCLA. During World War I, Morse volunteered with the American Expeditionary Forces, serving as a canteen worker in France with the Y.M.C.A. Her direct experiences and observations of soldiers and civilians during this period profoundly shaped her literary perspective. She is best known for her work "The Uncensored Letters of a Canteen Girl," which offers a unique first-hand account of wartime life from a personal, behind-the-front-lines perspective, emphasizing emotional nuance and the human side of military support. Her writing provides valuable insights into the complexities of war, compassion, and endurance through everyday scenes. She passed away in July 1975 in Brooklyn, New York.
