# J. Kurtz

## Biography

Johann Heinrich Kurtz, born December 13, 1809, in Monschau, near Aachen, was a prominent German Lutheran theologian. Educated at Halle and Bonn, Kurtz initially considered a commercial career before dedicating himself to theological studies. In 1835, he began his academic journey as a religious instructor at the gymnasium of Mitau. He later became an ordinary professor of theology at Dorpat, where he specialized in church history and exegesis. Kurtz was a prolific writer, known for his comprehensive works on church history and biblical criticism, many of which were translated into English and gained widespread popularity. Among his notable contributions are "Lehrbuch der heiligen Geschichte" and his extensive multi-volume "Church History," which provided a thorough examination of Christian development from its origins to the nineteenth century. He resigned his professorship in 1870 and spent his later years in Marburg, where he passed away on April 26, 1890.
