# George Gibbs

## Biography

George Gibbs was an American author, illustrator, artist, and screenwriter, born in New Orleans in 1870. After studying art, he moved to Philadelphia in 1898 at the invitation of Cyrus Curtis, founder of the Curtis Publishing Company. There, Gibbs became renowned for his magazine illustrations, creating covers and interior art for prominent publications like The Saturday Evening Post, Harper's, Cosmopolitan, and Ladies' Home Journal, including the Post's first color cover.

A prolific writer, Gibbs authored more than fifty popular books, primarily adventure novels often centered on espionage and international intrigue. From 1901 until his death in 1942, he consistently published about one novel per year, many of which were serialized in magazines and newspapers before book publication. Several of his works were adapted into films. Beyond his literary and illustrative careers, Gibbs was also a painter, creating portraits and murals for institutions like Pennsylvania Station.
