## Biography

Edward Elmer Smith, born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on May 2, 1890, was an American food engineer and pioneering science fiction author. Known widely as E. E. "Doc" Smith, he earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from George Washington University, specializing in food chemistry and notably working on doughnut and pastry mixes. Despite his scientific career, Smith is most celebrated as the "father of space opera," a subgenre he largely defined through his epic tales. His seminal work, "The Skylark of Space," first serialized in 1928, along with the influential "Lensman" series, introduced readers to vast interstellar conflicts, advanced technology, and faster-than-light travel, shaping much of subsequent science fiction. Smith's imaginative storytelling and grand scale narratives had a profound impact on the genre, inspiring countless authors and even influencing major franchises. He passed away on August 31, 1965, leaving behind a monumental legacy in speculative fiction.
