# Marie Leighton

## Biography

Marie Connor Leighton, born Marie Connor on February 4, 1867, in Bristol, was a highly prolific British author known for her sensational serial fiction and melodramatic novels. She began her writing career early, publishing her first novel, *Beauty's Queen*, a three-volume melodrama, in 1884 at the age of seventeen. In 1889, she married fellow writer Robert Leighton, subsequently adopting his surname. Together, they collaborated on her most renowned work, *Convict 99*.

Leighton’s literary output was extensive, encompassing over seventy novels, and her writing income far exceeded that of her husband. Her work captivated a wide readership in her day, though her name is less recognized today. She was educated in France at a convent and later in Tunbridge Wells. Marie Connor Leighton passed away on January 28, 1941, in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
