# M. James

## Biography

Montague Rhodes James, born in 1862 in Kent, England, was a distinguished medievalist scholar and celebrated author. Educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge, he enjoyed a prominent academic career, serving as Provost of King's College and later Eton College, as well as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. His scholarly contributions, particularly in biblical studies and medieval history, earned him high regard.

Beyond his academic pursuits, James is best remembered for his ghost stories. He redefined the genre, abandoning Gothic clichés in favor of contemporary, realistic settings imbued with subtle dread and dry humor. His tales, often featuring antiquarian protagonists encountering malevolent supernatural forces, are considered classics of English horror and have profoundly influenced countless writers. Originally read aloud to friends during Christmas, these chilling narratives were later collected in volumes such as *Ghost Stories of an Antiquary*. He passed away in 1936, leaving a lasting legacy as a master of the ghost story.
