# Gottfried Leibniz

## Biography

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was a towering figure of the Enlightenment, a German polymath born in Leipzig in 1646. He is most renowned for his independent co-invention of differential and integral calculus alongside Isaac Newton. Leibniz’s intellectual pursuits spanned an extraordinary range of fields, earning him the title of perhaps the last universal genius. He was a distinguished philosopher, mathematician, logician, scientist, and diplomat. His extensive work included the development of the binary number system, which forms the bedrock of modern computing. After studying law and philosophy, he served as a diplomat and advisor to various courts, including as a court librarian in Hanover, where he remained the center of his life until his death in 1716. His philosophical contributions encompassed metaphysics, logic, and theology, with notable works such as "Monadology" and "Theodicy."
