# Savinien Bergerac

## Biography

Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac was a prominent French writer, duelist, and soldier of the 17th century, born in Paris around 1619. Known for his exceptional wit and skill with a sword, he embarked on a military career before dedicating himself to literature and philosophy. Cyrano de Bergerac was a notable freethinker and satirist, his works often challenging contemporary religious and scientific beliefs. He studied under the philosopher Pierre Gassendi, which influenced his bold and innovative writing style. Among his most famous works are his proto-science fiction narratives, "Comical History of the States and Empires of the Moon" and its sequel, "The States and Empires of the Sun," which explored themes of space travel and utopian societies. He also authored plays like "Le Pédant joué" and the tragedy "La Mort d'Agrippine." Though his life was cut short, dying in 1655 at the age of 36, his imaginative writings and unique personality left a lasting impression. He is perhaps most widely recognized today as the inspiration for Edmond Rostand's romantic play, "Cyrano de Bergerac," which, while fictionalized, cemented his place in popular culture.
