# George Holmes

## Biography

George Charles Vincent Holmes, born in 1848, was a distinguished engineer, naval architect, and author. He received his education at Downham College, Cambridge, and was awarded a Whitworth Engineering Scholarship in 1871. Holmes served as Secretary to the Institution of Naval Architects until 1901, where he made significant contributions to the field. He later became the Chairman of the Irish Board of Works, undertaking important public service. His dedicated work led to him being knighted, receiving the K.C.V.O. in 1906 and later the K.C.B. He is remembered for his writings, including the notable works Ancient and Modern Ships, Part 1: Wooden Sailing Ships and Part 2, as well as The Steam Engine. Sir George Charles Vincent Holmes passed away in London in 1926 at the age of seventy-seven.
