# C. Goudiss

## Biography

Charles Houston Goudiss was born in Russia in 1880 and immigrated to New York as a young boy in 1889. He married Alberta Moorhouse in 1902, forming a significant partnership in the culinary world. Goudiss served as president of The Forecast Publishing Company, responsible for "The Forecast," a prominent New York-based publication dubbed "America's Leading Food Magazine." Together with his wife, he co-founded the School of Modern Cookery, an extension of the magazine that offered free classes in home economics and nutritional science. During World War I, Goudiss and Alberta co-authored "Foods That Will Win the War and How to Cook Them," a 1918 cookbook created in partnership with the U.S. Food Administration. This influential work provided over 400 recipes and guidance on rationing and conserving food for the war effort. Goudiss also penned "The ABC of winter foods" in 1923, continuing his focus on practical nutritional advice.
