# Walter Lippmann

## Biography

Walter Lippmann was an influential American journalist, author, and political commentator whose distinguished career spanned over sixty years. Born in New York City in 1889, he graduated from Harvard University, where he studied under notable philosophers. Lippmann was a founding editor of The New Republic in 1914 and later served as an editor for the New York World. He is credited with coining the term "stereotype" in its modern psychological sense and was among the first to introduce the concept of the Cold War. His seminal book, Public Opinion, published in 1922, critically examined the role of media and the challenges facing democracy. Lippmann's widely syndicated column, "Today and Tomorrow," appeared in the New York Herald Tribune for three decades, cementing his status as a respected voice in political discourse. He advised several presidents and was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes and the Presidential Medal of Freedom before his death in 1974.
