## Biography

Robert Michael Ballantyne was a prolific Scottish author, born in Edinburgh on April 24, 1825. His early life was shaped by family financial struggles, but at age sixteen, he embarked on a transformative five-year adventure in Canada, working for the Hudson's Bay Company. This period involved fur trading and extensive travel across vast wilderness, experiences that later profoundly informed his popular juvenile fiction.

Returning to Scotland in 1847, Ballantyne published his first book, "Hudson's Bay," the following year. By 1856, he dedicated himself entirely to writing, creating over a hundred books. He became renowned for his adventure stories, which often combined thrilling plots with strong moral lessons and meticulously researched geographical and historical details. His most famous work, "The Coral Island" from 1858, became a classic of boys' literature. Ballantyne also penned other notable titles such as "The Young Fur Traders," "Ungava," and "The Dog Crusoe." An accomplished artist, he also contributed illustrations to some of his publications. He passed away in Rome, Italy, on February 8, 1894.
