# Georg Buchner

## Biography

Georg Buchner was a German dramatist and writer, born on October 17, 1813, in Goddelau, Grand Duchy of Hesse. The son of a physician, he initially pursued medical studies at Strasbourg and Giessen, but his true passions lay in literature and revolutionary politics. Influenced by radical students, he co-authored "The Hessian Courier," a politically charged pamphlet criticizing social injustice. This involvement forced him to flee Germany to Strasbourg and later Zurich, where he continued his scientific studies and became a lecturer in natural sciences.

Despite his exceptionally brief life, Buchner's literary output was remarkably impactful. His major dramatic works include the tragedy "Danton's Death," the comedic "Leonce and Lena," and the groundbreaking, unfinished play "Woyzeck," which profoundly influenced later movements like naturalism and expressionism. He also wrote the novella "Lenz." Buchner's incisive, often pessimistic worldview permeated his writing. He died prematurely of typhus on February 19, 1837, at the age of 23, leaving behind a powerful, influential body of work.
