# John Kellogg

## Biography

John Azor Kellogg was an American lawyer, politician, and Union Army officer. Born in Bethany, Pennsylvania, in 1828, he moved to the Wisconsin Territory with his family in 1840. Kellogg studied law and was admitted to the State Bar of Wisconsin in 1857. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army in 1861, serving with the renowned Iron Brigade. During his service, he was captured and endured months as a prisoner of war before making a daring escape. He rose through the ranks, eventually receiving an honorary brevet to brigadier general. After the war, Kellogg penned "Capture and Escape: A Narrative of Army and Prison Life," a vivid account of his wartime experiences and imprisonment. Beyond his military career and authorship, he held positions as a U.S. Pension Agent and represented his district in the Wisconsin State Senate. He passed away in Wausau, Wisconsin, in 1883.
