# Edward Titchener

## Biography

Edward Bradford Titchener was an influential English psychologist, best known for establishing structuralism, the first major school of thought in psychology. Born in Chichester, England, in 1867, he pursued classical studies at Oxford University before traveling to Leipzig, Germany, to study under Wilhelm Wundt, often considered the father of experimental psychology. After earning his PhD in 1892, Titchener moved to the United States, joining Cornell University.

At Cornell, he founded a prominent psychology laboratory and developed his version of psychology, structuralism, which aimed to analyze consciousness into its basic elements through systematic introspection. He championed psychology as a purely experimental science and trained numerous doctoral students, including Margaret Floy Washburn, the first woman to receive a PhD in psychology. Titchener authored several foundational works, including the four-volume "Experimental Psychology" and "A Textbook of Psychology." He also founded "The Experimentalists," a group dedicated to empirical research, which continues today as the Society of Experimental Psychologists. Titchener remained at Cornell until his death in 1927, leaving a significant legacy in the institutionalization of experimental psychology in America.
