# Weedon Grossmith

## Biography

Walter Weedon Grossmith (1854-1919) was an English author, actor, painter, and playwright, best known for his collaboration with his brother George Grossmith on the beloved comic novel The Diary of a Nobody. Born in London, Grossmith initially trained as a painter, exhibiting his work at prestigious venues like the Royal Academy. However, facing financial difficulties, he transitioned to the stage, where he found considerable success as an actor. He specialized in comedic roles, and his portrayals of harassed, scheming characters became so popular that the "Weedon Grossmith part" became a recognizable theatrical archetype.

In 1892, he co-authored and illustrated The Diary of a Nobody, a satirical look at the daily life of a lower-middle-class London clerk, which has remained continuously in print and is considered a classic of English humor. Grossmith also penned other works, including the novel A Woman with a History and his autobiography, From Studio to Stage. He continued his acting and writing career until his retirement shortly before his death.
