# Walter Crane

## Biography

Walter Crane was an influential English artist and book illustrator, born in Liverpool on August 15, 1845. He became a pivotal figure in the Golden Age of Illustration and the Arts and Crafts movement, profoundly shaping children's literature with his distinctive designs. Crane is celebrated for his vibrant "toy books," produced in collaboration with printer Edmund Evans, which revitalized the aesthetic of nursery rhymes and fairy tales with their bold outlines and flat, bright colors. Beyond his prolific work in children's books, Crane was a versatile artist who also designed textiles, wallpapers, and contributed significantly to the socialist movement through his political cartoons and illustrations, believing art should enrich everyday life for all classes. He served as director of design at the Manchester Municipal School and principal of the Royal College of Art, and authored works on design theory. Crane passed away on March 14, 1915.
