# Stephen Stratton

## Biography

Stephen Samuel Stratton, born in London on December 19, 1840, was a distinguished English music critic, organist, and author. He began his musical journey as a chorister at St. Mary's Church, Ealing, and furthered his studies under Charles Lucas. Stratton held several notable organist appointments throughout his career, including at St. Bartholomew's Church in Edgbaston and the Church of the Saviour in Birmingham. Moving to Birmingham in 1866, he became the respected music critic for the Birmingham Post in 1877, a role he maintained until his passing. He was also a frequent contributor to the London Musical Press. Stratton co-authored "British Musical Biography" with James Duff Brown, published in 1897, and penned biographies such as "The Life of Mendelssohn" and "Nicolo Paganini: His Life and Work." He died on June 25, 1906.
