# Hendrik Van Loon

## Biography

Hendrik Willem Van Loon was a Dutch-American historian, journalist, and prolific author known for making complex subjects accessible to a wide audience. Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on January 14, 1882, he immigrated to the United States in 1902 to pursue his education at Harvard and Cornell Universities. After serving as a correspondent during the Russian Revolution of 1905 and World War I, he became a naturalized American citizen in 1919. Van Loon authored and illustrated numerous popular books, with his most acclaimed work being The Story of Mankind (1921), which earned him the inaugural Newbery Medal in 1922. He was praised for his engaging writing style and ability to simplify historical narratives for younger readers. During World War II, he utilized his platform as a radio broadcaster to deliver anti-Nazi speeches and aid European refugees, even collaborating with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Knighted by Queen Wilhelmina for his efforts in the Dutch resistance, Van Loon continued to write and advocate for freedom until his death on March 11, 1944.
