# A. Duncan

## Biography

Arthur William Duncan, an English-Australian analytical chemist and prominent vegetarianism activist, was born in Hull, Yorkshire, in 1856. He became a vegetarian in his youth, deeply influenced by the works of T. L. Nichols, and joined the Vegetarian Society in 1877. Duncan pursued a career as an analytical chemist in Manchester, working for James Woolley, Sons and Co., manufacturing chemists. A Fellow of the Chemical Society, he contributed valuable aid to the Vegetarian Society through his expertise in food chemistry. He authored several significant works, including "Foods and Their Comparative Values" in 1889 and "The Chemistry of Food and Nutrition," first published as a pamphlet in 1884 and later expanded in 1905. Duncan served on the executive committee of the Vegetarian Society and later as a vice-president. He eventually moved to New South Wales, Australia, but maintained connections with the vegetarian movement in England. He passed away in Punchbowl, New South Wales, in 1946, at the age of 90.
