## Biography

Charles Edwin Bennett (1858-1921) was a prominent American classical scholar and the esteemed Goldwin Smith Professor of Latin at Cornell University. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he pursued his extensive education at Brown and Harvard Universities, complemented by studies in Germany. Bennett is most widely recognized for his authoritative work, "New Latin Grammar," first published in 1895, which remains a foundational text for Latin instruction due to its clear explanations and systematic methodology.

Throughout his career, Bennett was a leading voice in American classical philology, emphasizing grammar and syntax in his research. He played an active role as general editor for the Allyn & Bacon College Latin Series and contributed significantly to the Loeb Classical Library with his translations, including Horace's Odes and Epodes.
