# Anthony Hope

## Biography

Anthony Hope, born Anthony Hope Hawkins in London on February 9, 1863, was a prominent British novelist and playwright. Educated at Marlborough College and Balliol College, Oxford, he initially pursued a career in law, being called to the Bar in 1887. While practicing law, Hope began writing articles and short stories, using his middle name as a pseudonym.

His literary breakthrough came in 1894 with the publication of "The Prisoner of Zenda," a highly successful adventure novel that established the popular "Ruritanian romance" genre. Its equally popular sequel, "Rupert of Hentzau," followed in 1898. The immense success of these works allowed him to abandon his legal profession and devote himself entirely to writing. A prolific author, Hope published over thirty novels and numerous plays, though he is best remembered for his Ruritanian tales. He was knighted in 1918 for his public service during World War I. Anthony Hope died on July 8, 1933, in Surrey.
