# Juan Jimenez

## Biography

Juan Ramon Jimenez was a celebrated Spanish poet, born in Moguer, Andalusia, in 1881. Initially pursuing art and law, he soon dedicated himself entirely to literature, publishing his first two books of poetry in 1900. His early work was marked by German Romanticism and French Symbolism, but his style evolved significantly throughout his career, eventually advocating for a concept of "pure poetry." A prolific writer, his most renowned work is the prose poem "Platero y Yo," which tells the story of a man and his donkey. In 1916, he married Zenobia Camprubí, who became his indispensable companion and collaborator. Due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Jimenez went into exile, living in Cuba, the United States, and ultimately settling in Puerto Rico, where he continued to write and teach at various universities. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1956 for his lyrical poetry. Jimenez passed away in Puerto Rico in 1958.
