# Apuleius

## Biography

Lucius Apuleius was a multifaceted Roman writer, Platonic philosopher, and rhetorician, born around 124 CE in Madauros, Numidia, in present-day Algeria. He received a comprehensive education in Carthage, Athens, and Rome, where he studied rhetoric and philosophy. His travels throughout the Mediterranean region fostered a deep interest in various religious mysteries and initiation rites, notably those associated with the Egyptian goddess Isis. After teaching rhetoric in Rome, Apuleius returned to Africa.

A significant event in his life involved his marriage to a wealthy widow, Aemilia Pudentilla. He faced accusations of using magic to win her affection, which he vigorously refuted in his famous oratorical defense, the Apologia. Apuleius is primarily celebrated for his picaresque novel, The Golden Ass, or Metamorphoses, the only complete ancient Latin novel to survive. This work narrates the adventures of a young man transformed into a donkey and is noted for its blend of humor, fantasy, and philosophical undertones, including the tale of Cupid and Psyche. He also authored several philosophical treatises. Apuleius likely died sometime after 170 CE.
