# John Hill

## Biography

John Alexander Hill, born in Sandgate, Vermont, in 1858, rose from humble beginnings to become a titan in American technical journalism and publishing. Raised in poverty in Wisconsin, he began working at a print shop at age fourteen. Hill was largely self-educated, with early career experiences that included working as a railroad engineer, silver prospector, and typesetter, even founding the Pueblo Daily Press. His passion for mechanical matters led him to contribute to technical journals, eventually becoming an editor for publications such as American Machinist and Locomotive Engineer.

In 1902, Hill established the Hill Publishing Company, which produced influential periodicals like American Machinist and Power. His most significant professional endeavor came in 1909 when he merged his book-publishing operations with those of James H. McGraw, creating the renowned McGraw-Hill Book Company. Hill served as president of this new venture until his unexpected death in 1916. His contributions also included authoring works such as "Stories of the Railroad."
