# Robert Browning

## Biography

Robert Browning was a prominent English poet of the Victorian age, born on May 7, 1812, in Camberwell, London. Largely educated at home through his father's extensive library, he developed a profound intellect and became fluent in several languages. Browning is celebrated for his mastery of the dramatic monologue, a poetic form where a single speaker reveals their character and often inadvertently, their psychological complexities. His early works include Pauline and Paracelsus, but his unique style truly flourished with collections like Men and Women and Dramatis Personae.

In 1846, he married the equally renowned poet Elizabeth Barrett, and they subsequently moved to Italy, residing primarily in Florence until her death in 1861. This period in Italy significantly influenced his work. Browning's reputation solidified with his epic poem, The Ring and the Book, published in 1868-1869. He continued to write prolifically throughout his life, earning significant critical acclaim and public recognition, including the founding of the Browning Society. Robert Browning died on December 12, 1889, in Venice, Italy, and was interred in Westminster Abbey's Poets' Corner.
