# Tom Purdom

## Biography

Thomas Edward Purdom was an American writer, music critic, and freelance journalist, known primarily for his contributions to science fiction and nonfiction. Born on April 19, 1936, in New Haven, Connecticut, he began writing at a young age, publishing his first science fiction story, "Grieve for a Man," in 1957. His prolific career spanned over six decades, including five novels and dozens of short stories and novellas. Notably, his novelette "Fossil Games" was nominated for a Hugo Award in 2000.

After serving two years as a medic in the Army, Purdom settled in Philadelphia, where he became an integral part of the local science fiction scene and a respected music critic, writing on the subject since 1988. His work has been translated into several languages, reflecting his international appeal. A charter member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA), he also served as its Vice President and Eastern Regional director. Purdom passed away on January 14, 2024, at the age of 87.
