# Sergei Rachinskii

## Biography

Sergei Aleksandrovich Rachinskii was a notable Russian academic, botanist, and educator, born in 1833. After graduating from Moscow University, he initially worked in the archives department of the Russian Foreign Ministry before returning to his alma mater as a tutor and later a professor of botany, serving there until 1868. Rachinskii also held the role of editor for the newspaper Russian Herald. In his later years, he devoted himself to religious education, establishing a renowned school for peasant children in Tatevo, where he also passed away in 1902. He was a prolific writer, authoring numerous books and articles on religion, art, literature, and science. Rachinskii was also an enthusiastic admirer of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's music and collaborated with the composer on several unrealized operatic projects. His dedication to public education significantly impacted the Russian public school system.
