# George Santayana

## Biography

George Santayana was a Spanish-American philosopher, essayist, poet, and novelist, born in Madrid in 1863. He relocated to Boston at the age of eight, where he would later attend Boston Latin School and Harvard University. At Harvard, he studied philosophy under prominent thinkers like William James and Josiah Royce, eventually earning his Ph.D. in 1889. Santayana then joined the Harvard faculty, teaching philosophy for over two decades and influencing students who would become significant figures in their own right.

In 1912, Santayana resigned from his academic position and moved to Europe, residing primarily in England, France, and Italy for the rest of his life. He devoted himself to writing, producing a diverse body of work that explored themes in aesthetics, ethics, and metaphysics. Among his most recognized philosophical works are "The Sense of Beauty," the five-volume "The Life of Reason," and "Scepticism and Animal Faith." He also penned the best-selling novel "The Last Puritan" and his autobiography, "Persons and Places." Santayana, who maintained his Spanish citizenship throughout his life, passed away in Rome in 1952.
