## Biography

Thomas à Kempis, born Thomas Hammerken around 1379 in Kempen, Germany, was a significant figure in late medieval spirituality. He received his education in Deventer, where he was exposed to the Devotio Moderna, a movement emphasizing personal piety and inner devotion. In 1406, he entered the Augustinian monastery of Mount St. Agnes near Zwolle, where his elder brother was prior. He was ordained a priest in 1413 and spent the remainder of his long life in the monastery, largely dedicating himself to contemplation, copying manuscripts, and instructing novices. He served as sub-prior at least twice during his time there. Thomas à Kempis is primarily renowned as the author of "The Imitation of Christ," one of the most influential and widely read Christian devotional books in history, advocating for humility, self-examination, and a Christ-centered life. He died in 1471.
