# Andrew Fetler

## Biography

Andrew Fetler was born in Riga, Latvia, in 1925, the ninth of thirteen children. His family immigrated to the United States in 1939 after touring Europe as the Fetler Family Band to earn passage money. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. Fetler pursued higher education, attending the University of Chicago before graduating from Loyola University in 1959. He later earned an MFA from the prestigious University of Iowa Writer's Workshop in 1964.

From 1964 to 1989, Fetler was a beloved professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. A published author, he released the novel *The Travelers* in 1965 and a collection of short stories titled *To Byzantium* in 1976. His work also appeared in esteemed publications such as *The Atlantic* and *The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction*. His literary contributions were recognized with several accolades, including O. Henry Awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a National Endowment for the Arts grant. Andrew Fetler passed away in Hadley, Massachusetts, in 2017 at the age of 91.
