# Gustave Le Bon

## Biography

Gustave Le Bon was a French polymath born in 1841, whose vast intellectual interests encompassed anthropology, psychology, sociology, medicine, invention, and physics. He received a medical degree from the University of Paris in 1866 but opted for a career in writing. His perspectives were profoundly shaped by the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune of 1871, leading him to travel extensively across Europe, Asia, and North Africa, where he engaged with anthropology. Le Bon is best known for his influential 1895 work, "The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind." In this seminal book, he introduced the concept of crowd psychology, positing that individuals within a crowd lose their sense of personal identity and rationality, instead becoming susceptible to a collective, emotional "group mind" driven by anonymity, contagion, and suggestibility. His ideas, though sometimes controversial, had a significant impact on fields such as social psychology, political science, and even early advertising. Le Bon continued his diverse intellectual endeavors until his death in 1931.
