## Biography

Leonard Leslie Brooke, who published as L. Leslie Brooke, was a celebrated British artist, writer, and illustrator known for his contributions to children's literature. Born in Birkenhead, England, on September 24, 1862, he cultivated an early love for drawing. After studying at Birkenhead School and the Royal Academy Schools, a severe bout of typhoid during a trip to Italy left him permanently deaf. Despite this challenge, Brooke pursued his artistic calling, initially as a watercolorist and portrait painter. His career trajectory shifted dramatically when he began illustrating children's books, notably succeeding Walter Crane as an illustrator for Mrs. Molesworth's annual stories in 1891. He gained significant acclaim for his witty and charming illustrations in Andrew Lang's The Nursery Rhyme Book in 1897. Brooke's enduring legacy rests on his beloved "Johnny Crow" series, which he both wrote and illustrated, beginning with Johnny Crow's Garden in 1903. His work often featured humanized animals, depicted with warmth and humor, captivating generations of young readers. He passed away on May 1, 1940.
