# Plutarch

## Biography

Plutarch, born around 46 CE in Chaeronea, Boeotia, was a prolific Greek writer, philosopher, and priest. He received a comprehensive education in Athens, where he studied mathematics and philosophy, particularly influenced by Platonic thought. Throughout his life, Plutarch held numerous public and religious positions, including serving as a long-term priest at the Temple of Apollo in Delphi. He traveled extensively, lectured in Rome, and cultivated relationships with prominent figures, including emperors. Plutarch is most celebrated for his "Parallel Lives," a collection of paired biographies of famous Greeks and Romans designed to illustrate their moral virtues and vices, rather than provide strict historical accounts. His other significant work, "Moralia," comprises essays on a wide range of ethical, religious, and literary subjects. Plutarch’s insightful exploration of human character deeply influenced subsequent European writers and thinkers for centuries. He died sometime after 119 CE.
