# George MacDonald

## Biography

George MacDonald was a Scottish Victorian author, poet, and Congregational minister, born in 1824. His early life as a clergyman was brief due to his unorthodox theological views, leading him to pursue a career in writing. He became a pioneering figure in modern fantasy literature, renowned for works such as *Phantastes*, *Lilith*, *The Princess and the Goblin*, and *At the Back of the North Wind*. Beyond fantasy, MacDonald also penned numerous realistic novels, short stories, and works of Christian theology, often exploring spiritual realities with a romantic vision. His influential body of work garnered a vast following during his lifetime and profoundly impacted later authors, most notably C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, and W.H. Auden. MacDonald passed away in 1905, leaving behind a legacy that, despite a period of decline, saw renewed appreciation in the 20th century.
