## Biography

Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection, born Nicolas Herman around 1614 in Lorraine, France, was a French Catholic religious brother known for his profound spiritual insights. From a peasant background, he experienced poverty and served in the military during the Thirty Years' War, where he sustained an injury. After leaving the army, he worked as a valet before seeking a deeper spiritual life. At the age of twenty-six, Herman entered the Discalced Carmelite priory in Paris as a lay brother, adopting the name Lawrence of the Resurrection. He spent much of his time humbly serving in the monastery kitchen and later repairing sandals. Despite his simple duties, Brother Lawrence cultivated a remarkable spiritual practice of experiencing the constant presence of God in all his daily activities. His wisdom, shared through conversations and letters, was compiled posthumously by Father Joseph de Beaufort into the enduring Christian classic, The Practice of the Presence of God. Brother Lawrence died in 1691.
