# Gerhart Hauptmann

## Biography

Gerhart Hauptmann, born November 15, 1862, in Salzbrunn, Silesia, was a prominent German dramatist, novelist, and poet, and a leading figure in the Naturalist literary movement. After an uncompleted apprenticeship and early struggles, his marriage provided financial stability, allowing him to pursue writing. Hauptmann’s breakthrough came with his controversial 1889 social drama, *Before Dawn*, which vividly depicted social realities and utilized common speech, ushering in a new era for German theater.

He continued to explore themes of human suffering, heredity, and societal constraints in acclaimed works such as *The Weavers*, a powerful dramatization of a workers' revolt, and the comedy *The Beaver Coat*. While primarily known for his naturalistic dramas, Hauptmann also incorporated elements of symbolism into his work. His significant contributions to literature were recognized with the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1912. Hauptmann died on June 6, 1946.
