# Johan Winkler

## Biography

Johan Winkler (1840-1916) was a Dutch physician, linguist, and author. Born in Leeuwarden, he initially pursued medical studies in Haarlem and Amsterdam. After serving as a naval surgeon on three voyages to Java, he established a medical practice in Leeuwarden before relocating to Haarlem in 1875. Winkler was deeply passionate about language, particularly Frisian dialects and onomastics, the study of names. He primarily contributed to scholarship through scientific publications but also penned stories such as *Grindebald* and *Jan Lou's*. His 1874 work, "Algemeen Nederduits en Friesch dialecticon," which included a eulogy for Guido Gezelle, garnered him recognition in Flanders. He was a regular contributor to magazines like *Rond den Heerd* and *Loquela*, and maintained an extensive correspondence with his friend, the esteemed poet Guido Gezelle.
