# George Trevelyan

## Biography

George Otto Trevelyan was a notable British statesman and author, born in Rothley Temple, Leicestershire, on July 20, 1838. He was the only son of Sir Charles Trevelyan and Hannah Macaulay, making him the nephew of the esteemed historian Lord Macaulay. Trevelyan received his education at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, where his literary and historical interests flourished.

His career was marked by a dual path in politics and writing. He served as a Liberal Member of Parliament for many years, holding various ministerial positions including Chief Secretary for Ireland and Secretary for Scotland. Although he briefly diverged from William Gladstone over the Irish Home Rule Bill, he later rejoined the Liberal Party.

As a writer, Trevelyan is perhaps best known for "The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay," a biography of his uncle published in 1876 that is widely considered a classic. He also authored several significant historical works, including "The Early History of Charles James Fox" and a multi-volume "History of the American Revolution." He retired from parliament in 1897 to dedicate the remainder of his life to historical scholarship, dying on August 17, 1928.
