# Pedro Calderon de la Barca

## Biography

Pedro Calderón de la Barca was a pivotal Spanish dramatist and poet of the Golden Age, born in Madrid on January 17, 1600. Initially, he pursued an education in law at the Universities of Alcalá and Salamanca, with an early expectation of entering the priesthood. However, his talent for writing emerged, and by 1623, he began crafting plays for the court, quickly becoming a favored playwright of King Philip IV and succeeding Lope de Vega as the era's leading dramatist.

Calderón also served in the military during the Catalan rebellion. Despite his secular success, he was ordained a Catholic priest in 1651, continuing to write prolifically for both public theaters and the court. His extensive body of work, comprising around 120 dramatic texts and 80 autos sacramentales, is celebrated for its thematic depth. Masterpieces like *Life Is a Dream* explore profound concepts such as free will versus predestination, while plays like *The Mayor of Zalamea* delve into honor and justice. He died in Madrid on May 25, 1681, leaving a lasting legacy as a titan of Spanish literature.
