# John Galsworthy

## Biography

John Galsworthy was an English novelist and playwright, born in Kingston Hill, Surrey, in 1867. Educated at Harrow and New College, Oxford, he initially pursued a career in law, following in his father's footsteps. However, he soon abandoned legal practice to dedicate himself to writing, a path encouraged by his future wife, Ada Pearson, whom he married in 1905. Galsworthy's literary career truly blossomed with the publication of "The Man of Property" in 1906, the first novel in his renowned series, "The Forsyte Saga." This sprawling work meticulously chronicled the lives of an upper-middle-class family, critically examining their values, particularly their possessive instincts and materialism. Beyond his novels, Galsworthy was also a successful dramatist, with plays like "Justice" and "Strife" highlighting social injustices and advocating for reform. His naturalistic style and keen observation of societal issues earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1932. He died in 1933, leaving behind a significant body of work that continues to resonate.
