# Llewellynn Jewitt

## Biography

Llewellynn Frederick William Jewitt (1816-1886) was a prolific British antiquarian, illustrator, engraver, and author, celebrated for his wide-ranging contributions to natural science, archaeology, and regional history, particularly concerning Derbyshire. Born the youngest of seventeen children in Kimberworth, Rotherham, he received much of his early education from his schoolmaster father. Jewitt began his career in London as a skilled wood engraver and illustrator, contributing to notable publications such as the Pictorial Times and the Illustrated London News.

He later served as chief librarian of Plymouth Public Library before returning to Derbyshire. There, he founded and edited the Derby Telegraph and, in 1860, established The Reliquary, a respected quarterly antiquarian journal he helmed until his death. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a key figure in forming the Derbyshire Archaeological Society, Jewitt authored over twenty books. His most enduring work, The Ceramic Art of Great Britain (1878), remains a significant reference in its field. He passed away in Duffield, Derbyshire, at the age of 69.
