## Biography

Guillaume de Lorris was a French poet and scholar active in the early to mid-13th century, primarily known as the original author of the influential medieval allegorical dream vision, the Roman de la Rose. Little definitive biographical information about him exists beyond his connection to this pivotal work. He is believed to have been born in the village of Lorris, situated east of Orléans, and was likely of aristocratic background. Around 1225 to 1230, he commenced the Roman de la Rose, crafting the initial 4,058 lines of the extensive poem. His contribution is celebrated for its courtly and refined exploration of love, depicting a lover's quest for a rosebud within an allegorical garden, drawing heavily on the traditions of troubadour poetry and courtly love. De Lorris died before completing his masterpiece, which was later significantly expanded upon by Jean de Meun approximately four to five decades later. Despite his limited output, Guillaume de Lorris's poetic vision profoundly shaped medieval literature, establishing a popular form of love allegory that resonated through the Renaissance and influenced subsequent writers, including Geoffrey Chaucer.
