# Howard Pyle

## Biography

Howard Pyle was an influential American illustrator, author, and teacher, born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1853. He became one of the most celebrated figures in American art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for his vibrant contributions to books and magazines. Pyle's illustrations appeared in publications such as Harper's Monthly and St. Nicholas, captivating audiences with his unique vision.

He is widely recognized for his retellings and illustrations of classic tales like "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood" and his King Arthur series, which greatly shaped popular perceptions of these legendary figures, including the iconic image of pirates. Pyle also founded his own art school in Wilmington and taught at the Drexel Institute, mentoring a generation of significant American illustrators, including N.C. Wyeth. He passed away in Florence, Italy, in 1911.
