## Biography

Harry Sinclair Lewis was a pioneering American novelist, short-story writer, and playwright, born on February 7, 1885, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. Educated at Yale University, Lewis became renowned for his incisive and often satirical critiques of American life, particularly during the interwar period. His works vividly portrayed the societal shortcomings, materialism, and provincialism he observed.

Among his most celebrated novels are *Main Street*, which explored the stifling nature of small-town life, and *Babbitt*, a biting commentary on middle-class conformity. He also authored *Arrowsmith*, *Elmer Gantry*, and *Dodsworth*. Lewis’s powerful characterizations and keen social commentary earned him widespread recognition. In 1930, he made history as the first American to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded for his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create new types of characters with wit and humor. He passed away in Rome, Italy, on January 10, 1951.
