# James Talmage

## Biography

James Edward Talmage was born in Hungerford, Berkshire, England, in 1862. His family emigrated to Provo, Utah, when he was fourteen. An intelligent and diligent student, Talmage pursued higher education at Brigham Young Academy, Lehigh University, and Johns Hopkins University, later earning a Ph.D. from Illinois Wesleyan University. He became a distinguished chemist and geologist, holding professorships at Brigham Young Academy and the University of Utah, where he also served as president. His scientific contributions earned him fellowships in several prestigious societies, including the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Beyond his scientific pursuits, Talmage was a prominent religious leader and prolific author for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Ordained an apostle in 1911, he authored several enduring theological works, most notably "The Articles of Faith" and "Jesus the Christ," which remain widely read. Talmage possessed a remarkable ability to articulate complex ideas, blending his academic rigor with deep spiritual conviction. He died in Salt Lake City in 1933, leaving a lasting legacy as both an internationally recognized scientist and an influential religious scholar.
