## Biography

Chrétien de Troyes was a pivotal French poet who flourished in the latter half of the 12th century, likely between 1160 and 1191. Although few concrete details of his life are known, he is believed to have been associated with Troyes and served at the court of Marie de Champagne, a significant patron of the arts. He is widely celebrated as the father of Arthurian romance and the chivalric novel, transforming existing Celtic legends into sophisticated narratives that explored themes of courtly love, chivalry, and adventure. His influential works include five major Arthurian romances: Erec and Enide, Cligès, Lancelot, Yvain, and the unfinished Perceval, which introduced the concept of the Holy Grail. Chrétien's innovative storytelling, rich character development, and use of vernacular Old French profoundly shaped medieval European literature and continue to resonate in modern retellings of the Arthurian legends.
