## Biography

Johanna Spyri, born Johanna Louise Heusser on June 12, 1827, in Hirzel, Switzerland, became a beloved Swiss author renowned for her children's stories. After marrying lawyer Bernhard Spyri in 1852, she moved to Zürich. Her writing career began in 1870, initially driven by a desire to aid those affected by the Franco-Prussian War. Her first story, "Ein Blatt auf Vronys Grab," appeared in 1871. Spyri's most celebrated work, "Heidi," a two-volume novel published in 1880–81, quickly became a global classic, translated into numerous languages. The heartwarming tale of an orphan girl in the Swiss Alps showcased Spyri's deep appreciation for nature and childhood. She faced personal tragedy with the deaths of her husband and only son in 1884. Despite her grief, Spyri continued to write, publishing over fifty more stories and dedicating herself to charitable causes. Her works often explored themes of nature, piety, and the simple joys of rural life. Johanna Spyri passed away on July 7, 1901, in Zürich, leaving behind a lasting literary legacy.
